Farm Shops & Local Produce

Happy Wallow Farm Shop at Dupath Farm is just a couple of miles from us and well worth a visit. Tre, Pol, Pen is a great farm shop and restaurant in Lezant about 20 minutes drive away. Another fabulous local farm shop is Trevallicks Farm Shop & Cafe is also about 20 – 25 minutes drive away and just on the outskirts of Bodmin Moor if you are heading that way for a walk.

Tamar Valley Meats is in the Tamar View Nurseries complex (on the left as you come up to us from Plymouth / Saltash) which select meat direct from their farm. Just slightly further away but well worth a visit is Bray’s Butchers in Tideford and do try one of their fresh Pasties!

For the best and freshest fish (normally caught that day!) visit the award-winning Pengelly’s Fishmongers (in Looe and Liskeard).

If you are visiting Tavistock, then Roots & Vines is well worth investigation selling fresh local produce including fruit, vegetables, beers, wines, preserves, cheese, artisan bread and more.

Markets

Callington Country Market is on the first Sunday of each month. Tavistock Farmers’ Market is well worth a visit (voted the ‘Best Farmer’s Market in the South West’ and a finalist for Britain’s Favourite Farmers’ Market) and in this attractive riverside town. The markets take place on the 2nd, 4th and 5th Saturdays of each month. In Plymouth, the Royal William Yard Good Food Market is on the first Sunday of each month. Tamar Grow Local offers online orders for delivery or collection of produce from within the Tamar Valley (hopefully their markets will restart soon as well).

Supermarket

Our closest supermarket is a large Waitrose near Saltash which is less than 15 minutes away. A few minutes further away is a Tesco in Callington. Both will deliver here, Sainsburys will also deliver as well. If you want to stock the fridge ready for your arrival, we are happy to accept a supermarket delivery with prior agreement.

Eating Out

Nearby pubs include The Weary Friar, a traditional inn with pub food, and the Who’d Have Thought It Inn which does pub food and has breath-taking views over the Tamar from their conservatory. The renown Rod and Line Pub has the pub atmosphere of old with good food and an excellent reputation as a music venue.  The Springer Spaniel Pub (just past Callington, about 20 minutes away from us) has very tasty ‘fine dining’  food. Manor House Inn in Rilla Mill is excellent (booking is sensible, especially for their Sunday carvery) and also about 20 minutes away from us.

Crocadon Bakery & Cafe (linked to the Michelin star restaurant) is 15 minutes away in St Mellion is well-worth a visit for delicious cakes, pastries and coffee – they mainly source produce from their regeneratively managed farm or from other organic, ethical producers who share their values. Calli Pizza Cafe is 15 / 20 minutes away in Callington and utterly delicious with regular live music evenings. Tre, Pol, Pen is a great farm shop and restaurant in Lezant about 20 minutes drive away. A visit to the riverside village of Calstock is well worth it and while there try The Tamar Inn for good pub food (and nearby excellent ice cream parlour plus great playground for young children). Crocodan Farm offering from chef, Dan Cox (formely at the famed Claridge’s Hotel Fera restaurant and the renowned Roux at Parliament Square) features regeneratively grown produce from the farm.

The Carew Arms in Anthony  (just under 30 minutes away) does good food and is very close to Portwrinkle beach and Anthony House (National Trust property). If you are at the beach in Cawsand, then do check out The Devonport Inn or The Salty Dog Cafe. Also well worth a visit is Heskyn Mill, both for the decor and the food. Summink Different in Downderry offers some delicious snacks and meals and is fully vegetarian / vegan.

Port Elliot House (a large country estate where you can visit the gardens and explore the house) is a short drive away (approximately 15 minutes) in St Germans (a lovely village to visit with plenty to do, read more here). Here there is The Stables Cafe & Shop (utterly lovely location and fab food, it is also the actual location of Martha’s Cafe in the TV series Beyond Paradise). For evenings, The Elephant Boutique Bar serves up drinks and live music.

Saltash has a number of good Indian and Chinese restaurants (a few will deliver), that also do take-away. Plus fish & chips or pub meals. Set on the riverside, just under the old Tamar Bridge is Riverside Sizzle serves a mixture of Asian (think Sushi!) and English food, including a variety of seafood and steak dishes – this place has a lovely feel.

Plymouth is our closest big city and has lots of dining options available. The Harbour seafood restaurant overlooks  the harbour and serves great food, booking is sensible! The Dock for exceptional al fresco dining overlooking King Point Marina uses locally sourced ingredients and welcomes children. In a stunning building and location near Royal William Yard (one of the best places to visit in the City) is the Artillery Tower.  If you are thinking of dining in Plymouth, then you could make a day of it by driving down to Cawsand / Kingsand Beach or visiting Mount Edgcumbe House on the beautiful Rame Peninsula and then getting the Cremyll Ferry across the Tamar River to Admirals Hard in Plymouth (runs approximately every 30 minutes, with a 10-minute crossing time) where it is a short walk to the restaurants. For a superb fish and chips supper we would recommend the The Rock Fish. They serve sustainable fish and gluten free, are single use plastic free and give out ocean protector kids bags – full recyclable and reusable. The Bonne Sante is a great mainly vegan restaurant – and you can read about other similar options here.

The Sardine Factory in Looe has limited opening times: Wed – Sunday: 12 -3 pm & 6 -9
pm,  is a great spot for you to really be able to make the most of local cuisine, whether you’re going for breakfast, a light lunch, dinner with friends or family, a romantic night out or a big celebration. Innovative and modern coastal cuisine served in the historic fishing port of Looe in Cornwall.  Using the freshest of day boat fish from Looe market opposite the restaurant the philosophy is to keep it simple and fresh. They let their ingredients do all the talking!

There are several tasty options in and near Tavistock.  We love Mime and The Kitchen for a friendly tasty cafe meal. On Dartmoor, The Highwayman Inn is an experience and is quoted as being the most unusual pub in Britain (apparently with its own ghost!).

If you are near Lostwithiel, then The Duchy of Cornwall Nursery is well worth a visit – their cafe recently won a Taste of the West Award.

Over in Padstow, widely thought to be the dining centre of Cornwall, there’s a wide selection of  restaurants – from family friendly café’s to fine dining options including a number of Rick Stein restaurants.
